Even the folks at Harvard Medical School are looking at hypnosis differently:
If somebody told you there was a medication that could treat 100 different conditions, didn't require a prescription, was free, and had no bad side effects, you wouldn't believe them. I don't want to sound like a snake oil salesman, because hypnosis is not a magic wand. But it should be made available as a supplementary treatment for all patients who could benefit. Right now.

What is hypnosis?
It's a naturally-occurring human state of mind that can be tapped to make profound changes in your life.
What's hypnosis like?
Try this experiment.
Close your eyes for a minute.
Take 3 deep breaths. Exhale very slowly each time.
Open your eyes. That's a bit of what it feels like. You'll actually be able to hear everything that's happening around you, but choose to disregard it.
How will you know you've been hypnotised?
Your hypnotist has a variety of ways of helping you realise you've been hypnotised. So trust your hypnotist to show you during or after your first session.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
No, you'll automatically get out of hypnosis within a few minutes.
How can you call this self-empowerment when I'm at the control of the hypnotist?
That's one of the biggest myths about hypnosis. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis, and the hypnotist guides you. You will only accept suggestions that do not conflict with your moral code. You will not do anything in hypnosis which you wouldn't do in real life.
What is 5-PATH hypnosis?
It is a powerful tool developed and taught by Calvin Banyan at the Banyan Hypnosis Center for Training & Services, in Minnesota, US. 5-PATH Hypnotherapy involves using hypnotic therapies in a systematic way that gives reliable results to individuals with a broad range of issues.
What is 7-PATH self-hypnosis?
It is a holistic self-hypnosis programme developed and taught by Calvin. This is the first self-hypnosis system of which we know of that allows you to use a Mind-Body-Spirit process to first cleanse the old programming that is resistant to change in order to make room for new programming of success.

If hypnosis is so great, how come so few people seem to use it?
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis and this gets in the way of its effective use, although technological developments are beginning to allow us to actually see the changes in brain activity when someone is hypnotised. And this moves us from hearsay to science.
Also many medical professionals are unaware of the benefits or are afraid of trying it because it is seen as a hocus treatment.
Thankfully, doctors like Herbert Benson, of Harvard's Mind/Body Institute have been researching this area. He's written several books including the Relaxation Response, which appears to be his way of labeling hypnosis so that it's acceptable to the people using it.
In his book, Confessions of a Healer, The Truth from an Unconventional Family Doctor, Dr OT Bonnett is more direct about his use of hypnosis in helping patients including a total cure of a thirtysomething who suffered a lifelong migraine.
Before drugs that produced anaesthesia were discovered, hypnosis was the best way of helping people manage pain from surgery.
