  • Or you could think of us as coaches for your subconscious.
  • Or you could think of us as the minders of your inner wellbeing.
  • So just the way you set a goal and get the help of a personal trainer or coach to reach it, you can set goals for school, work or sports, and use hypnosis to propel you forward.
  • But without the cheerleading quality or any hyped-up motivation, because when change comes from inside out, it is profound and long-lasting.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis has an image problem because of its history of being seen as a tool for mind control. That is one of the biggest myths of hypnosis. The reality is that you are in control of your experience and the hypnotist is just your facilitator.

Hypnosis is defined as a state of conscious­ness in which your logical analytical faculties are reduced sufficiently to allow deeper levels of your sub­con­scious mind to be utilised for your benefit.

It is a state of “focused concentration”. You can be virtually oblivious of what is going around you yet acutely aware of a narrow range of stimuli called to your attention by the hypnotist.

Levels of consciousness range from full alertness to sleep, and hypnosis lies in between. Using golf as an example, trance consciousness can range from daydreaming (in which you think of playing golf), light trance (you imagine yourself playing golf) to deep trance (in which you feel yourself playing golf).

Virtually everyone can be hypnotised, except for the mentally subnormal.

Be assured: Hypnosis only works with people who want to be hypnotised. In hypnosis you cannot be made to do anything against your will that is unacceptable to your own values and patterns of behaviour. You cannot get stuck in hypnosis. And if for any reason the hypnotist leaves, you will simply drift back to full consciousness, just the way you would if you had taken a nap.

The power of suggestion

Don’t think of a pink elephant.

And what did you just do? Did you just think of a pink elephant?

Hypnosis heightens the power of suggestion, so it sometimes feel like a command to the subconscious mind and it duly complies with the suggestion, for example if someone who want to lose weight is told to drink more water, the person may find themselves unconsciously drinking more water during the day. And still thinking of elephants. Imagine seeing a huge bull elephant being held back by a tiny chain attached to a peg on the ground.

The bull can obviously break the chain but as soon as it feels tension in the chain it stops pulling. One way of seeing it is to think in terms of a computer operating system(OS). The elephant is running on the same OS that it ran as the little elephant that stood no chance of breaking the chain. Hypnosis can be like a patch or an update to the OS to take in changes in the development over the years, so that we are not held back by limiting beliefs that were created when we were children.

I worked with Joe the day before a triathlon competition. It was not the most important competition ever and I was not particularly well trained, but, as always, I wanted to do well.

And then rest, rehydrate, celebrate. YEEEAAAH...! :)
